Traces of Time

In 'Traces of Time', Claire Benn tells a visual story about her experiences in New Mexico (USA), its extraordinary landscape, beautiful light and vast horizons.  For Claire, Georgia O'Keefe best sums up how she feels in New Mexico: "... as soon as I saw it, I knew it was my country.  It fitted me like a glove".

The pieces are inspired by the huge horizons offered by the landscape and the mesas, the Adobe architecture and the history of the region.  All of the work is abstract, elegant and reductive and uses raw earth pigments bound in acrylic medium, as this media enabled Claire to literally be connected to the earth.

‘Blue Highway’ refers to the road access to the pueblos.  In ‘Nothing Left to Burn’ the artist reflects on the use of wood-burning stoves in a desert area where there appears to be very little available wood. Two pieces ‘They Poisoned the Well’ and ‘We Cannot Drink’ refer to the story of the Acoma Pueblo where the First Nations community well was poisoned by conquerors.

New Mexico is an extraordinary place; huge vistas, an enormous sky and beautiful light. A place for solitude. A place for quiet contemplation. In particular, the Acoma Pueblo drew me in through its landscape, history, culture and adobe structures.
