in the fullness of Time

A series of hand-stitched works made on linen, antique French hemp and old grain sacks.  All of these materials are rich in social history and most of the cloth used has been dyed with plant material.  Whilst hand stitch can be considered 'craft', the collection is highly contemporary.  The exploration of rhythm and repetition through the stitched marks has a meditative quality and the works are elegant and tactile in nature.

The monochromatic and reductive paintings of artists such as Agnes Martin and Rebecca Salter were influential to these works, but the central theme is the act of stitching itself.

The title of the series refers to both the materials being full of the essence of time, and the time taken in the slow act of hand-stitching.

Stitching by hand is a form of meditation for me. I try to honour the cloth – particularly the antique hemp - which is full of history and want to keep it simple in the tradition of Wabi Sabi. As I stitch I often think about the lives and probable hardships of the previous owners of these pieces of cloth.

Selecting the thread. Threading the needle. Starting off. Stitching - needle in, needle out. Tying off. Feeling the texture under my fingers. Mind is still, mind rests.
